Biomechanist

What is a biomechanist?

A biomechanist is a specialist who looks at the way in which humans move and the forces that cause the motion. A golf biomechanist has specialist knowledge of the mechanics of the golf swing and how to optimize the movement pattern in order to produce a consistent and powerful motion.

How can a biomechanist help your golf game?

A biomechanist can assist you with your golf game by providing a precise description of your movement pattern, highlight those aspects of your swing that you do well in addition to those that inhibit or restrict your performance, and draw attention to those aspects of your movement pattern that are compromised by physical limitations you have with your body (e.g., lack of stability, strength or flexibility). Biomechanists who work with physical therapists and strength and conditioning experts can then devise programs of technical and physical improvement that complement each other and allow you to become the best possible golfer you can.

What type of tools and/or technology may a biomechanist use when working with a golfer?

Biomechanists typically use a variety of tools including video cameras, 3D trackers (e.g., magnetic trackers that allow real time measurement and animation of human movement) and force platforms (for measuring weight transfer during the swing).

How can I find a qualified biomechanist?

Most biomechanists work at Universities and colleges and some work in places such as the Olympic training centers. There a re a small number who work in private industry (except those who work in Occupational Biomechanics and Ergonomics) and for professional sports teams.
